Review of In the Realm of the Senses (1976) by Tim M — 23 Mar 2010
Empire of the Senses is an interesting film. Three decades ago it must have really been something. Even today the hardcore content makes it taboo. The directing shows it's age and doesn't help with the repetitive nature of the scenes.
It's too long, several scenes are tangential and could be cut, though they do break up the monotony. Score-wise it is austere, where's the taiko? Some parts are so absurd they are hilarious. "Baby, go bang that old lady playing the samisen and wailing.
" "Nanda!?" A remake with Helen Mirren as the old lady could be good, throw in Jamie Foxx as Kichizo and Kristin Kreuk as Sada and you got guaranteed Oscars.
