Review of In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007) by Eric G — 25 Jun 2009
WTF Jason Statham? That is all that needs to be written. As the worst fantasy movies keep coming onto Sci-fi channel and we are subject to derivatives of Lord of the Rings this movie stands out as the single dumbest incarnation of fantasy movies to date that was released to big screen. Even the campy Conan movies or the equally campy D&D movies were better than this lackluster film. At least in Conan there was a sense of mystery and magical danger, and in the Dungeons and Dragons movie, the special effects were pretty good for its time. But this movie is hopeless. The only worthwhile portion of the movie was the murder of the lead characters son by the evil Krugs. In most typical fantasy stories the wife is killed leaving the father and son to take care of business. This movie stepped away from that typical motion and gave us the murder of an eleven year old. Foreshadowing the acting to take place in the rest of the movie, everyone who sees that his son is dead seem more upset by burning fields than the death of a loved one. Still I was rooting for them to end the kids life as it seemed more humane than ruining his acting career by keeping him in this flop. As a director Uwe Boll has made one good film and it's in German, and that film is loosely based off it's American counterpart, the title directly stolen from the American film, the German version called German Fried Movie, the American called Kentucky Fried movie. At the expense of not being able to see anymore movies based on Video games, after watching IN the name of the King I have declared all Uwe Boll movies off limits from now on. Even if my favorite actor or actress is a main character his movies are off limits.
On a side note, Jason Statham should stick to Transporter movies as his acting in this movie and others is so wooden he appears to be a life size mannequin of himself.
