Review of In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007) by Tyler M — 27 Apr 2011
This 2007 fantasy-action film, based on a video game called âDungeon Siegeâ?, is heavy on itâ(TM)s action but comes up short in every other department. Director Uwe Boll takes yet another video game and completely destroys it by converting it to a film that lacks character, story structure, crappy effects and a weak script.
Not even the actors and actresses can save this box office bomb that barely made $10 million in the United States. The effects of the film were disgusting at best. The Krug looked like the abandoned costumes for the Urgals and other such creatures in the âLord of the Ringsâ? trilogy.
There is no originality present within the Krug. I will however praise the effects surrounding the Magi, both good and evil. The structure of the story lacked any forward momentum at all. While only an hour into the 127 minute film, I felt as if I had been watching the film for about three hours and I was very bored.
As for the script, it feels as if it was several scrapped scenes and plot lines from other really good fantasy films that were all thrown into one pot and woven into each other, with turns and revelations popping out of nowhere with no evidence to back them up.
The film completely lacked any characterization whatsoever. I cared for none of the characters except when the young boy dies and his father must bury him. Not even Claire Forlaniâ(TM)s crying could get me to care, which was, by the way pathetic.
When you compare this film to others such as Willow, Conan the Barbarian and Lord of the Rings, it pales in comparison and isnâ(TM)t even worthy to be put into the same room together, let alone the same category.
And as if the movie wasnâ(TM)t bad enough the first time around, they have a sequel already in progress to hit theaters soon. God help us all.
