Review of In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007) by Kim S — 04 Apr 2012
I don't write this kind of review very often. Mainly, because I know how hard they must have worked on corraling extras, setting up shots in the woods, makeup, SPFX, etc. After making three attempts to get through this project, I gave up caring and ended up heckling it as it got worse and worse (I've done that maybe 3% of my film fan life). The director, Uwe Boll did a shoddy job at... well... directing this thing. Every stunt was reeled set up (bad editing), some actors weren't on marks, there were continuity breaks everywhere and most of the extras did "totally-for-sure" hippy gestures for their reactions to everything! LOL.
SIDE BAR: What the hell is going on with Burt Reynolds?!?! Is he sick and dying? He looked like he was... and I'm not talking about his character (which was almost non-existent). I was so concerned for his health that when he was on horseback I worried for him. SAD. Matthew Lillard's character was so far gone from reality that I kept thinking the only thing missing was Scooby-Doo. Ray Liotta has always been good at the wiseguy roles, but I couldn't get my mind around his character because I don't think I've EVER seen a MAFIA WIZARD at ANY renfest I've ever attended. It was almost laughable... only I don't think that was the intent. I mean, can you picture a wizard brow-beating his love interest? I freaked. I'm a fan of Ron Perlman and, in my opinion, he delivered... as did Leelee Sobieski and Claire Forlani. I still do not understand why the powers that be cast Jason Statham in leading rolls. It may just be me, but I expect a leading actor to present the story, not "step in it" as it unfolds. I felt like he was dragged into this. I have to say that it may have been the writing that gave me this impression. Sorry guys & gals... not all projects can be good films.
