Review of In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007) by Julia L — 29 Apr 2012
Dreadful, but also so bad its funny. It actually had a budget of like £60m and I dont think Ive ever seen something so expensive look so cheap! Its the Lidl version of Lord of the Rings. The acting is horrendous, especially Ray Liotta hamming it up as the bad guy and Matthew Lillard mincing around in possibly the worst written role I can remember seeing in a film.
The whole thing is so badly put together its almost as if its done on purpose. Sweeping camera angles at the wrong times, editing meaning scenes just start without any build up, and characters appearing and disappearing without explanation.
At one point a battle jumps between day and night and then back again! Its also somehow stretched to 2 hours, I was considering turning it off half way through and writing that hour off! It has a couple of redeeming features in that some of the close battle scenes are reasonably well choreographed and the odd bit special effect looks decent.
It also provides endless unintended hilarity, so if you're in a mood for a laugh... Seriously though, avoid like the plague!
