Review of In the Name of the Father (1993) by Midhush I — 23 Apr 2008
Powerful film, even more shocking because it's true. It's strange to watch Daniel Day Lewis in this film and contrast it with his performances in There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York. Here, he is able to portray the suffering and determination of Gerry Conlon almost effortlessly, a man wronged by an oppressive and brutal justice system, but the way that this film becomes more than just a simple story of a man falsely accused is what makes it a cut above the standard legal drama.
Rather. it is the bond between father and son and the determination to clear his father's name that becomes the main point of the criminal case that would shake the British justice system. Pete Postlethwaite is superb in a very understated performance and Emma Thompson, even with a small supporting role, proves why she is quite probably the best actress to come out of Britain.
