Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by Jim C — 02 Jul 2008
This is without doubt Carpenters second best film of his career, with obviously Halloween being the best. Assault on Precinct 13 and The Thing are excellent, but this film is something else. Very rarely is a horror film made that makes you think all the time and makes you wonder what the fuck is going on. And just when you think you know what is going on it chanegs direction slightly and then something happens on screen to make you jump. Excellent stuff..!
Sam Neill is great in this, in fact some of my favourite films he is in are all classics, Jurassic Park and Event Horizon to name but two.
His portrayal of Trent, the sceptic and eventual luniatic is brilliant and his performance is quite exceptional. As with most films made in the mid-90's, it does look dated now, and I also find it hard to believe that there is no region 2 DVD of this movie - the one I have is from the States.
That aside, I love this film. Has you guessing and genuinely makes you uneasy throughout - just what you expect from Carpenter. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT..!
