Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by João Paulo R — 26 Aug 2008
Easily, one of the most under rated horror films of all-time. John Carpenter has made a few of those, and this one really stands alongside the first "Halloween" as one of his legendary entries.
An H.P. Lovecraft vibe casts over the story. Sam Neill is great as detective John Trent. He works for an insurance agency spotting scams. Meanwhile, horror writer Sutter Kane has disappeared. Described as the man who makes Stephen King look like Dr.
Suess, Kane's work has been proven to drive some readers crazy. Trent figures out that the town in Kane's books is real...or is it? Reality and fiction are hand in hand here and the story is both an edge of your seat thrill ride, and a very chilling premise.
My girlfriend is still scared to watch it for a second time. I love it, and would recommend it to all horror fans.
