Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by Lavaughn H — 19 Apr 2009
While most think Prince of Darkness is where Carpenter started to lose his touch, I believe it was a little later with this film. In the Mouth of Madness is a really good concept for a movie but it ultimately fails in its execution, drowns itself in blatant attempts to be tricky and leaves us with an extremely pretentious ending.
Sam Neill is well cast in the title role but even he can't do much with the lackluster script. As a resident of Markham, Ontario, Canada I was happy to see some of our landmarks in the film, but that's where the excitement ends for me.
One of my least favourite Carpenter films which still makes it better than a lot of horror movies.
