Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by James L — 24 Apr 2009
My favorite Lovecraft film of all time. This film is really less of an adaptation and more of a tribute. It doesn't attempt to retell any one particular story, but captures the overall mood and feel for a successful trip into the Lovecraft universe.
Granted, it has its weak links, but for a fan of the Cthulhu Mythos, the film holds true to catching a glimpse of the spirit behind H.P Lovecraft's creative genius. I think this film requires you to read between the lines.
You have to look beyond the veil of what you are physically seeing on the screen. Much like Lovecraft's stories, the true horror and genius isn't always what is being said, but what is being hinted at.
If one were to stop and fathom the true horror of what we don't know, we could very well be driven insane by that knowledge and that is what I think this film is intended to tell us. Perhaps it simply fell short due to limitations that could have been overcome with more time, money, and forethought.
