Oh man, what an awesome movie. Creepy, atmospheric, at times confusing, and unbelievably well-acted by Sam "The Pimp" Neill (who is essentially the Marlon Brando of horror films), this is a movie that I saw on MonsterVision with Joe Bob Briggs as a middle schooler.
The movie's story, as it were, revolves around a series of murders taking place around the release of a horror author's latest novel, and insurance investigator Neill being the man on the case.
The story in this film - Carpenter's best since "The Thing" - is secondary. It's all about the performance of Neill, who runs the gamut here from cool and calm to bats**t crazy, and the oppressive suspense that takes place in the idyllic Stephen King-ish small town that houses the majority of the film's action.
