Sam Neill gives this film a certain credibility and Carpenter's direction is more than competent, in fact, it has multiple creepy images. That said, atmosphere is not enough to sustain my interest for the entire running time.
At some point the bizarre and puzzling plot just gets tiresome. I ultimately didn't care much about the insane story. Knowing it was inspired by HP Lovecraft helps in understanding its approach but frankly it kinda fails in coming together.
