Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by Brad A — 06 May 2011
This is John Carpenter's homage to Howard Philips Lovecraft. Even the title of the movie is a homage to Lovecraft, merging the titles "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" and "At the Mountains of Madness.".
When this movie came out in the 90's I loved it and would have given it 5 stars then. Being a fan of Lovecraft and the "Cthulhu Mythos", I loved all the elements of weird in this movie. People turning into monsters in the shadows. And I thought the premise of the movie was brilliant : that sanity is defined by the majority, so if the majority of people in society went insane, then sanity and insanity would flip places.
But on re-viewing this film, it really does not stand up to the test of time. So many pieces of the movie are dated. And I was distracted by how BRIGHT the scenes in this movie were. For a Horror movie in todays world the scenes would be dark and moody, but instead here we have extremely bright scenes which distract from being scary.
