Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by George B — 21 May 2011
It's a total cheese fest with some herendous acting from the girl acting along side Sam Neil, but John Carpenter gives his signature atmospheric, and creepy directing that helps make the movie both creepy, and actually pretty scary.
The girl who is opposite Sam Neil is terrible, she thinks that she's doing s good job when really the emotions in her voice keep changing and it comes off as just laughable. Sam Neil does a pretty good job, he makes the movie fun to watch by creating a very cartoony and impractible lead character. Even if you disagree and think that Sam Neil is just as terrible as the girl, you have to atleast agree that Sam Neil is a good actor and he's having a blast acting in this thing.
John Carpenter I think is the only man on earth that could make this movie work the way it did. The movie didn't have to be scary or any other word for it, it could have just been a stupid little popcorn flick to watch around Halloween time. But for John Carpenter, that's UNACCEPTABLE!! He gives the movie a really dark and unsettling feel and makes you feel like you just want to leave that god forsaken town that they keep trying to leave. You know you have a great director when he can turn such a silly movie with such a mediocre script into a really creepy and enjoyable movie to watch on Halloween.
I reccomend this movie, if your looking for a horror movie that's a little bit different this time around with some disturbing images and a rockin' soundtrack, then this is for you.
