Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by Joe A — 09 Jun 2011
One of Carpenter's stranger movies, Madness tells the story of the search for a missing Stephen King-like writer by an insurance investigator. What he finds is a Lovecraftian horror far worse then anything in author Sutter Kane's books.
Flick is spooky and strange with a good cast and some very creepy sequences. It's a bit more offbeat and surreal then most people expect from Carpenter and while not always successful in it's goals, one can appreciate what he was trying to do.
It was also refreshingly different then the pop culture savy "Scream" spawned horror flicks that were coming out at the time. An underrated Carpenter flick.
