Review of In the Mood for Love (2000) by Matthew G — 03 Oct 2009
In The Mood For Love has the narrative pacing of a crippled turtle being dragged by a garden snail. With that being said, this was by no means a poor film. The richest viewing can only come from a patient absorption of the film's mood, feelings, and repetitive, yet effective score.
Kar Wai Wong's ephemeral visuals, re-played scenes, and ambiguous ending provide for a very subjective film, where the viewer may craft what story and ending they wish for the film's two lovers.
Its strengths by far lie in its mise-en-scene rather than its narrative, yet In The Mood For Love remains a subtle and unassumingly rending portrait of forbidden, inactive, and platonic love.
