Review of In The Mix (2005) by Mike L — 04 Apr 2006
The problem is not that In the Mix wears the cloak of many different genres without ever declaring a major as many critics would have it, although the point is valid. The problem is that the film is more a display of beautiful people than anything.
Of course it is no fault of Usher Raymond or Emanuelle Chirqui that they are beautiful but there is no believable way that you can take human beings this self aware of their stunningness and place them within a crime film that involves risk and danger.
Why you ask? Well, Usher's character could never possibly be beliavabley in danger; it would mess up his posh new suit. Which is a shame, as Chazz Palminteri does his best in a thankless two-dimensional version of a character that he has played better many times before.
Or how about this, drop the crime story and fasion a romantic vehicle around Usher in which he, nor every other female on the planet know how desirable he is; now that might be worth something.
