Review of In the Loop (2009) by Caleb H — 25 Apr 2012
In the Loop is a strange movie to release in the ADD age-a film you actually have to listen to in order to understand most of the humor. Political satire works best when it's cutting, fast-paced, and dialogue-based, and In The Loop hits all three marks with aplomb.
For an inattentive audience member expecting broad pratfalls and cursing, In The Loop is probably going to induce a shrug. For those audience members who can appreciate the humor that is derived from purely brilliant dialogue, this is a rewarding film.
The acting is first rate, with actors who can behave-for the most part-like people who might actually exist in the real world. Peter Capaldi has the same amount of insane screen presence as Kevin Kline did in A Fish Called Wanda, and Tom Hollander gets to eschew his usual scummy persona in favor of being hilariously dumb.
Sure, the movie requires a base familiarity with the workings of government, but-at least for those who can appreciate the humor-In The Loop is fucking hysterical.
