Review of In the Loop (2009) by Sonal N — 29 May 2010
Sharp, witty political satire that pokes at the U.S. and British political machines without coming across as mean spirited or too stupid to swim in such waters. Where 'W.' felt like a high school activists tantrum as commentary, this feels more like ex-journalists wanting to have lighthearted, but not moronic, playtime.
Strong performances abound and deliver straight faced laughs without punchlines. The jokes come naturally, frequently, and never feel forced or desperate to amuse you. It's definitely British. If you think the American version of The Office is funnier than the British one, this probably isn't going to strike the right cord with you. But for those who like their comedy a bit slowed down, a bit quieter, a bit subtler, where the funniest parts aren't necessarily even jokes (well timed inflections of voice, facial expressions) then this will be one of the funnier movie watching experiences you've had in several months.
Well deserving of the praise it's received.
