Review of In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011) by Kelly J — 13 Jan 2012
Wow... I went into this film feeling a little uncertain about whether it would be a hit or miss. Three minutes in, I completely forgot that I was watching a film by an A-list Hollywood actress, and I did not think about the name "Angelina Jolie" again until the credits rolled. It was a highly engrossing, though long, film, and I left wanting to discuss it with my friends (which I did).
The film is unique in that, though it is a war film, it is told largely from a civilian perspective. At times it felt a little choppy cutting back and forth between the female and male lead, but overall their story had a beautiful arc. It was neither cookie cutter or sadistic, and though I have a hard time relating to it given it's context, it somehow felt very real.
Don't bother getting popcorn for this one because you probably won't have the stomach to eat it.
