Review of In the Heat of the Night (1967) by Brad B — 29 Jan 2008
Although this movie may seem tame it was quite groundbreaking in it's day. Made during the civil rights 60's it was a novel aproach to bring a story of this genre to the screen featuring a black man as the films hero.
Poitier is such a class act. Intelligent and mature he is the perfect black man to throw into this murder mystery set deep in the Jim Crow south. Tame and almost juvenile by todays standards of violence and language but you must bare in mind this was made back in 67 so it can be forgiven, besides it still plays well just on the basis of the story and the acting delivered here.
The real crux of this movie is not the murder story but diametrically opposing characters played by Poitier and Rod Steiger and the grudging respect and relationship that develops between them.
Poitier is a consummate professional and always a joy to watch!
