A revolutionary film for its time, "In the Heat of the Night" features some of the sharpest dialogue and most engaging screen performances of all time. Rod Steiger's gum-popping, bigotted chief of police is the perfect balance to Sidney Poitier's stone-faced homicide officer.
Norman Jewison gives us a heated examination of racial prejudice in all its forms, but disguises it as a taught, entertaining murder mystery so as to prevent the film from becoming preachy. One of the greats.
