For films dealing with racism, In the Heat of the Night is the kind of film that should be watched alongside the likes of Do the Right Thing instead of useless films like Crash, as you'll likely learn something from them.
The whole murder mystery plot in Night really takes a backseat to the general tone of the piece and the outstanding performances by Poitier and Steiger, especially near the end when the two share a drink together in Steiger's home.
