Review of In the Heat of the Night (1967) by Stephen E — 11 Nov 2012
At the center of its story lies a murder mystery, but "In the Heat of the Night" is less concerned with solving the central investigation than it is with showing the blatant bigotry that corrupted the South.
Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier both do a great job in their roles, even though Steiger's aggressive performance threatens to upstage his calm and cool co-star in several scenes. "In the Heat of the Night" is also a technically well-made film with an appropriately jazzy score that goes well with its gritty but stylish look, and though it's dated in some aspects, it deserves its place as one of the better crime films.
It's certainly had an influence on those that came after it.
