Review of In the Heat of the Night (1967) by Simeon D — 08 May 2010
In the Heat of the Night is a great film works as an effective commentary of 60's racism in the South and also as an engaging crime drama. The stellar performances of Poitier and Steiger are what really hold this movie together.
Poitier has a commanding yet humble screen presence as a young, intelligent homicide detective and Steiger gives an excellent performance as an ignorant cop, both in his police work and racial views. The music is great, the message is nice, and the twist ending is always a welcome one.
It's a Best Picture winner that deserved it.
