The reviews around the site say it well enough if you read between the lines.

If you haven't read Moby Dick, or you're a teenager, you probably won't get or enjoy the movie. Poor reviews for a movie so riveting only prove exactly why hollywood now panders to people with short attention spans who crave flash over substance. Everyone wants comic book heroes instead of the the tales of real men. I thought the movie was fantastic, and often found myself holding my breath during the most stressful times in the movie. Howard won't win any oscars, but this is up there with Apollo 13 to me.
