Review of In the Heart of the Sea (2015) by Thebear — 30 Dec 2015
Ron Howard's latest demonstrates plenty of potential and is engaging up to a point but the longer it goes on the more ambivalent I became because quite simply the characters never earn that kind of investment.
Howard sets the film up well with a story of two opposites forced to come together in a common cause but that story is never really given time to play out once a giant whale turns up to turn the film into a survivor story that, to be honest, has been done a lot better before (Life of Pi).
It has some great moments and Chris Hemsworth is a decent lead but ultimately I feel that Howard hasn't managed to achieve greatness with a film that feels like it's missing something but it is something that is good if unmemorable.
