Review of In the Hands of the Gods (2007) by Neil K — 11 Jan 2008
There's nowhere near enough of the quintet's mesmerising ball skills, and it's prone to cheap shots - like a sneery encounter with Hollywood Boulevard street entertainers - that we could probably do without.
Still, the boys' enthusiasm and determination gets to you, and their spirit shines through even in the more manipulated exchanges here. At its truest, the film speaks eloquently about the way young men interrelate - the passive-aggressive sulks, the clumsy shows of affection, the quiet pride in one another's achievements - and manages the not inconsiderable feat of repositioning Maradona as a genuine source of inspiration rather than a bloated drug cheat.
