Review of In the Hands of the Gods (2007) by Jim F — 24 Sep 2008
Soccer AM's Skill Skool takes a road trip across the Americas to meet Diego Maradona. Not really, of course but the documentary does follow 5 freestyle keepie-uppie artists as they busk there way to Maradona, blagging flights and even TV time along the way.
At first I thought this would promote the absolute joy of football and for moments it does. But the film soon becomes too interested in the lowbrow reality show type personality dramas that cheapen these sorts of films.
Funnily enough there is too little of the Skill Skool stuff as the lads descend into infighting and selfishness. In the end only three of the five actually make it to Argentina and meet Diego.
That one is lost in his tears meeting Maradona is either dramatic/touching or profoundly cringeworthy depending on your point of view. Let's be clear, I found it horrendous.
