Review of In the Company of Men (1997) by Philip B — 30 Jun 2007
I have known about this movie since it was filmed because it was filmed in Fort Wayne, Indiana, my hometown, and it was big news in the area. It also has received very positive reviews from critics overall.
Now that I've finally seen it, I can say I don't really like it. The actors do a good job, they are all very convincing in their roles, and I can see why some people might be interested in watching the film as a study of two unsympathetic people who do a very cruel thing for no real reason, but I like to see more character development than that.
The example that comes into mind right away is Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal, where she plays a very wicked, nasty person but is able to round her character into something more than just a personification of nastiness.
I like the locales, seeing as I've grown up around most of them - the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, complete with electric cars, the airport, a nice view of the statehouse, and Cindy's Diner, a small boxcar diner that is situated right in the middle of all the large downtown buildings.
It looks very out of place, and makes good burgers. Neil LaBute has gone on to bigger and better things, and I can see a lot of his ideas that he manifests in later movies taking root here. But this is not a movie I'd recommend to anyone.
