Review of In the Company of Men (1995) by Steven B — 03 Sep 2008
This is a brilliantly twisted film about a corporate asshole played by Aaron Eckhart in an fine performance, and his longtime friend and co-worker who is his supervisor on a project. They weave a 6-week scam on an unsuspecting deaf woman in their office as a way to exact their revenge on all women.
It's a little hard to laugh when you know what they plan to do, but there are moments that are darkly funny. There's no soundtrack. The mood is totally set by the characters. This is a movie driven by dialogue.
It's about meanness, deception, revenge, and the danger of letting one's guard down. It's good and complex, but I felt dirty while watching it. The characters are that deplorable, especially Eckhart's.
