Review of In the Bedroom (2001) by Kelly N — 06 Nov 2007
Incredible. A poignant, moving illustration of the process of grieving. One of--if not THE most--realistic films I've ever seen. Every line, setting, detail, expression, and emotion was lifelike and relatable. Stellar acting by all the leads, thus the academy award nominations it received seem well deserved. The subject matter is wrenching, tragic, and disturbing, and yet it still manages to keep from being remotely over-dramatic or sensationalized. I truly respect the restraint used by the director in this area, as it is what made this movie different and superior to other films dealing with such dark themes. Not a movie for everyone--far from it, really; only those ready for a depressing and troubling ride should view this. And chances are, it will stick with you for a long time afterwards.
Endnote: my only discrepancies lie in the use of language, and the last portion of the film, which somehow didn't fit in quite well with the rest of the film, disrupting the realistic flow, as it were. Nonetheless, the very ending was absolutely fitting, and quietly profound. Keep both eyes open for the plethora of symbolism present throughout.
