Review of In the Bedroom (2001) by Blind P — 28 Mar 2007
Who told me to watch these?? I have no record. If ya want to take credit for your standing in the Great Informal Who Can I Trust Most Ranking System, pony up.
------------------------------------------------------------------.
Thank You For Smoking essentially reverses every expectation of role that a more politically correct film would present, specifically in one's family relations and concern over general human welfare.
As such, there are some entertaining twists, though the dialogue does take on an air of "hey look, we're doing comedy" by the smartassed looks on every player's face.
It's one where I enjoyed the concept more than the execution, but it wasn't a bad watch. I don't take to comedies too often, finding them formulaic and pedantic to the point of offense, even further despised when the "romantic" tag is applied.
Fortunately, there isn't much romance here, and the path to enlightenment for our lead is to continue being a bastard for profit.
------------------------------------------------------------------.
Infernal Affairs is every bit as good as The Departed, and in fact I found the movies so similar that I wouldn't recommend anybody to watch them too close together.
Based on the look of the films, I'd give the original a slight edge.
I really enjoyed little things like the scene on the rooftop near the end, with a quick shot of reflection almost too quick to see as our anti-hero is being stalked by our deep cover cop.
------------------------------------------------------------------.
In the Bedroom started out as the kind of thing that bores me for its subject matter, and I had to rely on faith in whatever tomato told me to watch it to keep going.
I thought I had a relationship drama on my hands, with the love of the woman being the chief goal, so it was a nice surprise to see it turn into a victim's rights piece that could have been made by a lobbyist for such.
Despite a slow pace, it is well concevied and I found it passably enjoyable.
Nice shot of Stahl's character after the Big Event, for the morbid humourist.
------------------------------------------------------------------.
I must have grabbed these off roguebooks list, I'm thinking...off to check out that very thing, I am.
