Review of In Good Company (2000) by John B — 16 Jun 2008
Wow. I was really impressed by this movie. It's along the lines of "Lost in Translation," "Garden State," or a Wes Anderson/Noah Baumbach movie, only with a sweeter sensibility.
Not overly sentimentalized though - compassionate if anything. Topher Grace, Dennis Quaid and Scarlett Johansson are all great in this film, as they tend to be. The story starts out with a situation that you expect to be entirely predicatable and boring, but it surprises and delights the viewer with its deviations.
The movie never portrays the characters as charicatures, which is one of the most endearing aspects of the movie. It doesn't try to preach any kind of overarching message, it just presents the events and allows you to draw from them what you will.
Very impressive and probably even suitable for the whole family. How often can I actually say that about a movie I enjoy without being sarcastic?
