Review of In Good Company (2000) by Samantha P — 11 Oct 2010
Fairly enjoyable movie. Dennis Quaid is a good actor. Proves that some jobs in this world, old is gold. And how the coporate world can change so fast. Dennis is a hardworking salesman for a sports magazine.
He has 2 daughters Scarlett Johansson and Zena Grey and one beautiful wife Marg Helgenberger. He found a pregnancy test kit in the bin and think Scarlett is using it. Topher Grace is a young salesman from another company selling cellphones.
He got his big break by following his boss Clark Gregg to the new company Dennis works at. And Topher is taking over the section by Dennis. Later Dennis found out Marg is pregnant. Scarlett plays tennis with Dennis and is going to enrol into NYU which is expensive.
He assure her not to worry. He is shock Topher been so young and no experience is his boss now. And he has to move out of his office. Topher returns home but his wife Selma Blair is leaving him. The speech from Topher manage to psyched everyone up.
But he told Dennis their department needs to boost sales up fast and cut down on salary. He doesn't want to fire him. Topher got so aimless after Selma left he plans a meeting on sunday noon. Leeched onto Dennis home for dinner.
Had small chat with Scarlett. She moves into the dorm and the school fees is sustain via their 2nd mortgage. Topher sign the divorce papers. He insist to ask a big potential client to a concert instead of the usual basketball game which Dennis know very well.
But still it didn't work out as both their company are at feud over other business. Topher said he have to fire 2 more workers, David Paymer the meek guy one of them. Dennis thinks he should reveal it as he hires them.
One day Topher saw Scarlett at a cafe and they go on date after that. She invited him to her dorm and they sex. Continue to see each other thereafter. Dennis birthday party he saw them holding hands. During work break, he follow Topher and caught the couple lunch date.
He punched Topher. He said he love her. Later, Scarlett think they should stop seeing each other as she is busy with school. Marg admitted to hospital but is alright. Dennis talked to Scarlett and told her to continue studies, money isn't problem.
The company CEO Malcolm McDowell pays a visit and during the speech, Dennis raise some questions oon his new moves. He said they are excellent questions and want the employees to answers them themselves.
Clark is angry of his action and fires him and Topher. They bluff to him they have a big deal coming and they have 24hrs to nail it. Dennis goes to find the first client Philip Baker Hall. He ask Topher what happen to his eye.
Dennis said he slug him as he say he is a dinosaur. It kind of works the deal. Both men go back but realise the company is been sold. Clark and Topher are fired but not Dennis. He wanted to hire Topher back but he feels lifeless.
Need a break. David Paymer is hired back by Dennis. Topher bump into Scarlett at the lobby and had a brief chat catch up and parted ways. Marg give birth to a healthy baby girl.
