Some of the plot is a little overdone/overdramatic but it's a nice story and shows some great surfing. The reaction that I have seen from surfers is that it portrays them as being something that they are not.
As a surfer myself, I see their point but I don't feel that there is a message aimed at me. The reason why this movie is so generally appealing is that it is really a movie about youthful abandon and following your dreams, and that is something that everyone can identify with.
