Review of In Fear (2013) by Richard D — 25 Mar 2015
This film is almost worth watching for the first half hour, which is pretty great. A couple who have only been dating for a couple of weeks go on a road trip to a Music Festival in Ireland. They get lost in a maze of roads looking for a hotel and start to feel that they are being stalked by someone.
The tension in this part is wonderful. It's largely restricted to the interior of their car, and shots of the passing countryside are really menacing. When you learn what is really going on, the film goes almost completely off the rails.
Most of the tension leaves the film and the explanation for what has been happening makes very little sense. The two leads are on-screen alone together for most of the film, and they do a great job, especially when their apprehension starts turning to panic.
The score is also really marvellous.
