Sweet Dreams...

Okay, so there's stuff that even a lot of style can't really help, and In Dreams is a perfect example of this. Neil Jordan directed this dark supernatural psychological thriller.

The Story: A woman is haunted in her dreams by a killer/kidnapper. The more she dreams the more she slips into insanity. After the kidnapping of her daughter, she becomes obsessed with him. Obsessed with finding him, and finding out who he is, and why he does these terrible things. He knows that he's in her dreams, in fact he's the one controlling her dreams. He takes control of her life as he slowly breaks her mentality down...The problem is the story is pretty much just her dreaming and going insane. Her husband plays a small part in the film as he isn't around much, and her daughter is only in it for a little while as well. It's a cycle of repetition, she dreams, she goes a little insane, she dreams again, and goes a little more insane, and dreams again, and well you get the point...It doesn't go very far, and it doesn't go very fast.

The Cast: Annette Bening, Aidan Quinn, Robert Downey Jr....It's a good cast but the most of the acting is overdone. Annette Bening is Clair Cooper, the dreamer. She kind of overdoes it throughout most of the film. She's definitely been in better features. Aiden Quinn, is the husband who overdoes it just as much if not a little less. He plays the part decently, but not he's not the best of the film. And Robert Downey Jr., the kidnapper, is the one that really stands out in this film. I'm not a big fan of him but he is actually the best part of this film. He plays the childlike kidnapper to a tee. He delivers the best acting in the film, which is strange because he's probably the worst actor in the film. Did that make any sense?

One to Five Scale: 3.

There's no denying the true artistic style of this film. It's lowlight photography at its best. It's dark cinematic feel makes the film worth renting if you ever see it on the shelf.
