Review of In Darkness (2011) by Andy W — 19 Jan 2012
This is an incredible film. Agnieska Holland (Europa Europa) did a phenomenal job capturing a fresh perspective on a subject that so many people are already aware of. In the midst of the atrocities going on around them, people were still people. They had affairs, they fought with their siblings, they fell in love. Watching this long, dark film set primarily in a Polish sewer, you truly felt the coldness, the darkness, the wetness.
In the Q&A following the screening, I was fascinated by how no-nonsense Holland's approach is. She had a clear vision for this film and worked tirelessly to make sure her vision was realized on the screen. The characters, based on real people, were artfully brought to life on the screen.
