Review of In Darkness (2011) by Sarfaraz A — 17 Sep 2012
In Darkness 'W ciemności' a Polish/German/Canadian film directed by Agnieszka Holland from the screenplay by Canadian writer David F. Shamoon. It is based on true events, that tells a story of Leopold Socha sewer-inspector in the Nazi-occupied Poland (having vast knowledge of the city's sewer-system) he sheltered bunch of Jews during the Holocaust. In Darkness is based on the book 'In the Sewers of Lvov' by Robert Marshall, it was written by the only living survivor of the said group in 1990. Krystyna Chiger had written a memoir of her experience 'The Girl in the Green Sweater: A Life in Holocaust's Shadow (it's delay to be published hindered in its journey to an adaptation for this film. Film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Oscar award.
Many movies have come-out over the severe plight of Jews during WW-II many have captured our attention, and our resentments have been quicker to accept those tragic events. Though this movie doesn't focus entire on the Holocaust in Poland, we do have miserable situation of underground sewerage life for bunch of Jews, who are seeking shelter there, from the Sewer-inspector Socha (after paying him on weekly basis, whether money or jewelery doesn't matter at all). There is notion of realization of guilt of consciousness by Socha.
