This faithful adaptation of Truman Capote's 'nonfiction novel' is a gripping meditation on the ineffable qualities of crime and its motivations. Despite its age, the film holds up exceptionally well, as it blends together Richard Brooks' provocative screenplay, Conrad Hall's stark cinematography, Quincy Jones' jazz-heavy score, and Robert Blake's brooding performance.

A well-made, multi-layered thriller that does justice to the book it's based on.
