Review of In Bruges (2008) by Wes M — 16 Mar 2013
"Maybe that's what hell is, the entire rest of eternity spent in fucking Bruges." Holy cannoli, Batman! Ok, first off, the one reason I avoided this movie for so long was Mr. Collin Farrell.
I don't like him. He's overhyped Meh Street, just off Average Boulevard. Well, those days are over, the guy has talent, it just wasn't fully utilized til now. I think I feel the same way bout him as I do bout Nick Cage.
Anyways, about the movie. This is a slow burn crime drama, complete with dark comedy, depression, and tense and emotional scenes. It's also the feature debut for director/writer Martin McDonagh. This guy is gonna go places, fast.
Well, maybe not fast, might not see his next movie surface til 2016 haha, he's slow but awesome. Farrell plays opposite Brendan Gleeson. Gleeson needs to start taking more lead roles rather than supporting, cuz he's brilliant.
(Most of you know him as Mad Eye Moody from 'arry Potter, but he's also had mini roles in Braveheart, 28 Days Later, Troy, A.I., and Gangs Of New York.) Don't worry, I won't give anything away: two hit men have to hide out in Bruges, Belgium.
That's it. O, and their boss is Ralph Fiennes and he plays Harry. Yes, Voldemort is Harry *explodes mind*. Besides this being just plain cool, it's also riddled with a great score and some artsy camerawork.
And did I mention it takes place 'in fuggin Bruges!' Hmm, I could've sworn I did. All that being said, it's a flawless, low budget sleeper hit. Now on to McDonagh's new one, 7 Psychopaths!
