Review of In Bruges (2008) by Reid C — 17 Jun 2014
One of my favorite films. Gorgeous cinematography, enchanting score, and mystical setting. More importantly, McDonagh's writing and direction is absolutely perfect. He mixes dark humor in dialogue/banter with extreme violence and dramatic irony in a manner that for me surpasses even Tarantino.
There are no wasted moments in this film, and the dichotomy between the breathtaking scenery and music with the stark, absurd violence is amazing. Bruges is a purgatory for Farrell's character Ray after he committed an unspeakable, accidental crime, while it is a vacation for his partner Ken.
When the boss gives Ken the actual purpose of their visit, it becomes a bloodbath. I can't recommend this film highly enough, Mcdonagh got robbed for the Best Screenplay Oscar. Also check out McDonagh's other work, which includes Academy Award winner short film Six Shooter, and the more light hearted film Seven Psychopaths.
He is famous as a playwright, and many of his play scripts are available online as well. Not to mention his brother John Michael McDonagh, who directed the hilarious film The Guard, and the upcoming Calvary.
