Review of In Bruges (2008) by Joe C — 04 Jan 2015
In Bruges kind of came and went without anyone noticing. Stage director Martin McDonagh's first film has two hit-men hiding out... In Bruges... after a botched job. A deftly written out-of-nowhere British black-comedy brimming with breadth and depth (and 1.
18 uses of the F word a minute), In Bruges is one part cockney romp, one part dramatic character study, and two parts *beep* off. In Bruges' remarkable script is one whose depth and ability creeps up on you, as the beauty of Bruges and the coarse dialogue belie a truly humanistic experience.
Raunchy, artsy, violent, an IQ of 140, a large helping of heart, an in-yer-face attitude and even a twist of fairy tales; In Bruges is a clever fusion of contradictory notions that gels perfectly. I'm a fan.
