Review of In & Out (1997) by James R — 10 Jan 2010
I caught this on TV earlier on in the week; and it reminded me that I have seen this film and that I mostly enjoyed it. It's a harmless little comedy that pootles along at its own pace never really breaking into the world of hysterical laughing but still producing a relatively strong giggle per minute rate.
Kevin Kline is a high school teacher outted by an ex-pupil during an oscar speech and so begins a question that provides the premise for the rest of the film. Is Howard Brackett gay? His life is turned upside down as he struggles with this question but the film meanders its way harmlessly to a very natural conclusion.
There are no shocks, there are no surprises....this film is the epitome of feel good comedy in all its mediocrity - just the sort of thing Kevin Kline is good at.
