Review of In America (2003) by Christian M — 04 Feb 2008
This happens so seldom: just happened to zapp into this one on a tv channel that usually shows B-movies and action. And just got stucked. Tis is a captiovating drama in low key with captivating acting and ingredients from psycho thriller/horror.
A slightly surrealistic atmosphere surrounds what in other ways is a realistic story about a married couple and their cildren's way towards overcoming a tragedy. Samantha Morton, wose charisma I have admired in various side roles for years, does a stunning performance, as does Considine and Hounsou.
The children are very good as well, slightly weird, but in the end at the centre of the drama, where the plight of the older sister makes the somewhat happy ending not so happy after all. Where will she go after having carried the burden of her family's sorrow for years and in the end taking on the responsibility of saving her father from breaking up inside?, I ask myself.
Not a pretty thought to entertain...
