Review of In a World... (2013) by Peter F — 14 Aug 2013
Actress Lake Bell might be best known for Adult Swim's rather brilliant medical drama satire Children's Hospital at the moment, but for her directorial debut she strays from (too much) absurdist comedy and instead makes an empowering movie about sexism in the work place that also happens to have a fairly original backdrop.
The world of voiceover actors isn't something that's really been explored in a narrative film before, and it's certainly a prime area for one to criticize patriarchy, as well as fun a venue to get down a quirky romantic comedy.
Bell is really appealing in the movie, and she's also rounded out a cast that seems to be a who's-who of scene-stealers from great sit-coms. Not all of the drama in the film works, and it will be a bit too modest for some, but Lake Bell shows that she is a focused and generous filmmaker with this premiere offering.
