Review of In a World... (2013) by Steve W — 26 Sep 2013
Let's start this up front, the trailer for this movie sucked. When I heard about this film, I was interested. When I saw the trailer, I almost didn't watch this solid film.
Carol Solomon is 30, living with her father, and wants to be the next big voice acting star. But her father isn't very encouraging or supportive, and kicks her out so his new girlfriend can move in. While top voice actor star Gustav Warner is sick, Carol does a voice over for a quirky kid's romance film and starts getting gigs, upsetting the status quo.
Despite producing, directing, writing, and starring in the film, Lake Bell doesn't let her ego get in the way and lets other have plenty of good scenes. There is a lot of small roles or cameos, and everyone gets at least one solid and hilarious scene. The movie has a lot of breathing room, and never tries too hard to be funny.
The result is a charming little indie comedy gem about people and their personal and work lives solely around voice acting work. Ultimately at its bare bones, In a World is about a strained relationship about a father and his two daughters. Its funny, heartfelt, and satisfying in all the right ways.
