A fun and upbeat film that shows great promise for first-time writer/director and star Lake Bell. In A World focuses on the humor, but delves deeper into the personalities of the characters than many dramas we see. Bell clearly has something to say about how women present themselves, especially in the media, and In A World... is clear and concise with its message, without being weighed down by it.

With a hilarious supporting cast and a strong script, Bell is able to craft a world that I was otherwise unaware of. It plays out like other great career-based comedies where the characters are exaggerated in their conception and portrayal, but feel real in their emotions and motivations. Every character here feels like a real person, even if they are too exaggerated to be an exact portrait of a person. This allows In A World... to be hilarious while still being emotionally accessible.

Bell has a distinct voice, no pun intended, and In A World... showcases it in a way that leaves us wanting more. This is an artist I'd love to see more from, and am excited about what she's got coming up next. But for now I can enjoy In A World's complex characters and great moments of laughter and heart.
