Review of In a World... (2013) by Ray H — 06 Feb 2014
This is a mildly interesting, slice of life story. The title refers to a famous phrase in the community of voice-over actors/performers. It unfolds over the space of a few days or maybe a couple of weeks. There is a romance, and a young woman trying to get her career off the ground. The dialogue was usually, very fast, complex, and always very clever. Perhaps, too clever; reminiscent of a Woody Allen, New York/East Coast, neurotic, navel-gazing sensibility. Although it was well written; this extreme, narcissistic, story point-of-view, has limited appeal for me.
There is a competition for new work or contracts between an olde scion of the industry and the new up-and-comer. Both actors were OK. But, the younger, new guy, Gustav Werner (Ken Marino), seemed miscast to me. His voice just was not that appealing nor arresting.
The film was written, and starred in by Lake Bell, as Carol Solomon. The story held my interest. This is not a laugh-out-loud, funny comedy. Some scenes brought a smile to my face. We can all relate to the common ups and downs of romance, and of trying to get established in a job/career we really like.
The movie chuggs along. There are some good actors and very good scenes to enjoy as the story moves forward.
It was an OK trip to the flics.
